Accessible Learn VLE sites: what to expect

Each module's Learn Ultra VLE site should use the relevant departmental template to give broad consistency in site content and organisation across module sites. Templates contain:

  • Module information section: learning outcomes, staff details, key departmental info
  • Assessment section: instructions, assignment submission points, past work etc.
  • Replay Lecture Capture (Panopto): lecture recordings and other video resources
  • Reading Lists: the important books, chapters and articles you'll need for the module
  • Module materials section(s): in most cases this should be weekly sections

In an accessible VLE site:

  • key module, assessment and staff information is clear and easy to find.
  • the Replay Lecture Capture and Reading List links are available.
  • all module readings are included in a well-strcutred and tagged Reading List.
  • module materials are organised in sequential sections (usually weekly), with minimal nesting.
  • descriptions are included for weekly sections and individual items, including any tasks to complete.
  • there are online ways to engage with content.

If any template sections are missing, or you're struggling with contant or the organisation of the site, please contact your module leader or departmental accessibility contact.

Here's an example of an accessible site:

Blackboard Ally for accessible reading

The Blackboard Ally tool lets you use files and VLE pages in a way that works for you. Find out more about the formats available and how to convert content on the Blackboard Ally page.

Two formats could be particularly useful for making reading online more accessible:

Immersive Reader format

The Immersive Reader fomat lets you customise how text appears; you can now change the background colour, font, font sizes, spacing, and how many lines appear at once. You can also click the play icon to have the page read out to you, and customise the voice.

BeeLine Reader

The BeeLine Reader format lets you download a HTML file which opens in a new tab. You can customise the text colur to show as a gradient, making chunks of VLE text easier and faster to read. There is also a night mode, which has a black background.

This is what the 'bright' colour option looks like:

Paragraphs of text where the colour gradualkly changes froim black, to blue, to black, to red and back to black.

Using Lecture Recordings Accessibly

In Panopto, the software that plays lecture and workshop recordings, there are various options to access recordings accessibly:

  • Adjust volume and playback speed
  • Turn on captions, and download a transcript of the captions
  • Navigate through the video using your keyboard
  • Search the content in the video and bookmark it to make it easier to find
  • Add notes to help you understand the content

Accessibility problems?

If you encounter an accessibility issue with any of the materials in your Learn Ultra VLE sites, Replay/Panopto videos or other online resources, please first contact your module leader to address this.

Each department also has a departmental accessibility contact who can help. Find their details on your departmental accessibility statement. This is found within each module Learn Ultra VLE site:
