Seeing everything on screen at once

When you're reading or writing online, you’ll probably need to be able to see more than one document or window at once. For example, while you're reading an e-book or a journal paper, you'll need to see your note-taking software too.

Use this page to explore some tips and tricks to seeing all the applications you need on one screen.

Fit everything you need on screen

Using two screens or devices

View multiple documents

If you just need to view multiple documents, a simple solution is to open them on different devices (e.g., read a paper on a tablet and make notes on a laptop).

Interaction between documents

When you need the documents to interact (e.g., copy information from one document to another, or open links in a new window) you can extend your display across multiple screens:

  • If you have multiple MacOS devices (e.g., Macbook & iPad), use Continuity for Apple [Webpage] to use one of them as a second screen.
  • If you have multiple screens (e.g., laptop and monitor, or computer with two monitors), you can extend the display [Webpage] to show different content on each.

Switching between documents or windows

You can also quickly move between fullscreen documents:

Windows:

  • Click the Task View icon in the bottom left of your screen (small rectangles with a vertical line) to show all open windows and documents, then click the one you want to switch to.
  • Alt+Tab: hold down the Alt key. Press Tab until you highlight the window you want, then let go of both buttons to switch to it (demonstration below).

MacOS:

  • Press Cmd+Tab to cycle forward through open windows and documents.
  • Press F3 to show all open windows and documents, then click the one you want to switch to.
