Maths Workshops

You can access workshop materials any time on the Numerical Reasoning resources page.

Numerical Reasoning for Employability

  • During this workshop, we will explore how to answer typical numerical reasoning test questions and point you to useful resources.
  • This will be a hands-on session. You will attempt actual questions from up-to-date employer tests used for graduate recruitment, using practical methods for solving problems quickly.
  • We will also introduce you to AssessmentDay, with free practice tests with complete solutions.

You can access workshop materials any time on the Numerical Reasoning resources page.

Statistics Workshops

Workshop materials can be accessed at any time on the Statistics resources page.

Statistical Software Workshops

Getting Started with STATA

This workshop will get you using STATA statistical software so you understand what the software is and the basics of the coding language used by STATA.

In this introduction, you will look at data, clean data and run simple tests and graphs.

No prior knowledge of computer coding needed to attend this session.

Getting Started with SPSS

This session is for those who have never used SPSS before or want a refresher.

You will learn how to get data in, how to clean your data quickly, and how to create graphs in SPSS.

Getting Started with RStudio

After introducing the RStudio interface, this workshop will introduce you to an RStudio workflow that includes importing, managing and plotting data.

This session is suitable for people who have not done any computer coding before.

Preparing to Analyse Quantitative Data Workshops

Planning for Data Analysis

This session is for people who will analyse quantitative data for a research project, dissertation, or thesis.

You will learn how to create a data analysis plan, which is a helpful tool (similar to a recipe) for managing and analysing your data.

Choosing a Statistical Test

In this workshop, you will learn the key factors to consider when selecting the perfect test appropriate for your data. We will explore real-world data scenarios and master the "Which Statistical Test" tool.

Whether you're a researcher or a student, this workshop is suitable for anyone wanting to analyse data with clarity and ease.

Managing and Analysing Questionnaire Data

This session is for people who have collected and will analyse quantitative questionnaire data using statistical software (e.g. SPSS, RStudio, STATA, Excel).

We will cover the types of data produced by different question types, how to summarise and visualise responses and how to analyse data.

Using an example dataset, you will be able to practice managing and analysing questionnaire data in your chosen statistical software.

Running Statistical Tests

ANOVAS

This session explains various ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) tests that look for significant differences between groups or measures.

In this workshop, you will practice running these tests in your chosen statistical software (e.g. SPSS, RStudio, STATA).

This session will explain the theory of this type of statistical test, which study designs can be appropriately analysed by ANOVA tests, and how to run the tests in your preferred statistical software. Tests covered:

  • One way Independent ANOVA
  • One way Repeated Measures ANOVA

Regressions

This session explains various regression tests which aim to predict an outcome variable using one or more different predictor variables.

In this workshop, you will be able to practice running these tests in your chosen statistical software (e.g., SPSS, RStudio, STATA).

This session will explain the theory of this type of statistical test, which study designs are appropriately analysed by regression tests, and how to run the tests in your preferred statistical software. Tests covered:

  • Simple regression
  • Multiple regression (with both continuous and categorical predictor variables)

Feedback from a student

"I was completely lost in STATA and where to start and the sessions helped me understand the basics and as a result was able to present my assessments."

Feedback from a student

"Gave me confidence regarding the statistical approach to use"

In-Person Workshops

In-person workshops take place in LFA/144 in the Harry Fairhurst Building. Here's how to get there:

  1. Start at the JB Morrell Library's main entrance.
  2. Turn left and follow the corridor straight ahead towards the Harry Fairhurst Building.
  3. Keep going down the corridor.
  4. Take the stairs directly in front of you to the 1st floor.
  5. Once you reach the 1st floor, look rightLFA/144 is the room directly facing the stairs.

Online Workshops

Online workshops take place via Zoom. Here's a quick guide on how to attend using Zoom:

  1. Log Out of Personal Zoom Accounts:
    • Before joining, log out of any personal Zoom accounts you use
  2. Login with Your University Account:
    • Go to the UoY Zoom login page.
    • Select "Sign in / configure your account." This will take you to your normal York login.
  3. Enter Your University Credentials:
    • Type in your UoY username (e.g., abc1234) and password
  4. Join the Workshop:
    • Once you have logged into Zoom using your University of York account, click on the workshop link provided.
