Supporting students' digital literacies: a Practical Guide

Resources at York

Guidance and support to staff on developing student digital literacy capabilities, including embedding digital literacy in programmes, training opportunities and student support.

Digital skills resources at York

The digital skills team in the Library have assembled a breadth of resources you can use or refer to. On this page we'll take a look at them in more detail.

Digital labs

We have two digital labs in the Library with facilities that all students and staff can use:

These labs allow members of the University to engage with new technologies, and help foster creative thinking. We have focused instruction on digital creativity and technology, and we've worked with academic departments to embed into the curriculum the use of multimedia tools such as podcasting and video editing.

Here's a selection of case studies from the Creativity Lab:

Digital skills training

Throughout the year we run a programme of digital skills workshops open to all members of the University. You can direct your students to these sessions as appropriate (we can even facilitate block-bookings for whole cohorts).

Most of our sessions are online and are usually recorded, with the recording shared afterwards with anyone who's signed up, so even if there's a timetable clash there can still be an asynchronous alternative.

We usually share our slides and other workshop materials on the relevant page of the Skills Guides.

As with everything else on these guides, if you want to have a chat about how to incorporate our generic offer into your own teaching, please do get in touch.

Skills Guides

Our Skills Guides are our main online resource for academic and digital skills. Most of the content on them is open and reusable (see below).

Repurposing and reusing our skills resources in your own programmes

Almost everything on the Skills Guides (slide-decks included) is published under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence so do feel free to make use of what you find on these pages (within the bounds of that licence).

For any Google Workspace documents, you'll usually be able to make your own copy by going to File > Make a copy within the document itself.

You can link directly to a Skills Guides page, or even to a specific box on a page. You can get a link to most boxes by using the icon in the top right-hand corner of that box. Boxes even have additional links to stand-alone versions (indicated by in the top right-hand corner of most boxes as well as in our Index) should you just want to highlight specific content in isolation.

A lot of our content can also be directly embedded into webpages or the VLE. Take these boxes, for instance, like this "Reusing content" box you're reading now. You'll find most boxes indexed on our Index page, where you can also flick a toggle to show the HTML to use to embed such boxes elsewhere. You can do the same for videos and slide decks too (though not all of these will be in the index).

Embed code example

Not all boxes are listed in the index. To embed any Skills Guides box, copy the link for the pop-out button in the top right of the box you want to reuse, and use it with the following code snippet (replacing the holding text):

<div style="position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: auto; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%;"><iframe style="position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;" src="INSERT POP-OUT URL HERE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>

The embed codes make use of inline frames (iframes), which are not always the most elegant way to reuse content. If you'd like help reusing our content in a more substantive way, get in touch with the Library's digital skills team.
