Digital Creativity: a Practical Guide

Bambu 3D printers

A practical guide to getting digitally creative and using digital tools and technologies to explore work, ideas, and research.

Using Bambu Lab 3D printers

At the YorCreate lab we have Ultimaker, Flashforge, and Bambu Lab 3D printers. We'll explore how to get started using the Bambu printer.

What do we have available in YorCreate?

In YorCreate in the University Library, we have one Bambu Lab P1S.

You can find out more about the specs of the Bambu Lab P1S if you're interested. Here are the key things you need to know if you want to book and use these printers:

  • They can print in one colour with the filament stored on the back of the printer. We do not have the automated material station so they should not be used for multi-colour prints.
  • They have a build volume (maximum size of prints you can make) of 256 x 256 x 256 mm.
  • You can use Bambu Studio software to slice your 3D models ready to print using the Bambu Lab printer.
  • You need to put your sliced file onto a microSD card to put into the printer to send your job to print (as the printer is not connected to the network).

Steps for printing with a Bambu Labs P1S printer

The basic workflow for printing on a Bambu Lab 3D printer is as follows:

  1. Get a 3D model.
  2. Import your model in Bambu Studio, choose the settings you want to use, and slice your model.
  3. Book your Bambu Lab printer using the booking system, ensuring you use the Total time estimate which includes heating up time, and add an additional 10 minutes for cooling down at the end.
  4. Put your sliced file onto the microSD card using the PC next to the Bambu Lab printer and then put the microSD card into the printer.
  5. Choose your file on the Bambu Lab printer and start your print.
  6. Watch the printer at least a few minutes to ensure your print starts as expected.
  7. Stay in YorCreate whilst your print is completed.
  8. Once your print has completed and says so on the printer's screen, wait until the temperatures are both below 60 degrees and then you can open the door and remove your print.

Bambu Studio

The Bambu Studio interface has a main space for viewing your 3D model on the print bed and a range of settings for ensuring your print is how you want.

Bambu Studio is the default software you can use with the Bambu printer to get your 3D model ready for printing. You can use it on the slicing PC next to the Bambu Lab printer in YorCreate or get it for free on your own device (bearing in mind that you will need to transfer your sliced file onto a microSD card for putting into the printer to print). When you first open Bambu Studio, you will need to set it up to slice for a Bambu Lab P1S, using Bambu PLA filament.

Bambu Studio allows you to slice your 3D models, meaning that you set up the layers that will be printed using the 3D printing and settings such as how thick the layers are and how much the model is filled in. Once you slice a model, you will end up with a file you can transfer to a 3D printer to print. Our Bambu Lab P1S walkthrough guide covers some of the important settings to know about.

You can also look through Bambu Lab's own guidance pages on Bambu Studio (but bear in mind if you're using the printer in YorCreate, the printer is not networked so you will not be able to use networked features in Bambu Studio):
