CREATIVITY LAB

This page is an overview of the Creativity Lab, as space based in the University of York Library. We have a range of services, workshops and facilities to support many aspects of Digital Creativity and Creative Media. Our facilities our available to all active members of the university, including Students, Staff and Researchers.

About the Creativity Lab

The Creativity Lab is here to help everyone at the university to explore emerging technologies, and to experiment with Creative Media. We offer workshops, recording facilities, equipment hire and 1:1 support to help people work on Creative Projects. We love to show interesting tools for Digital Creativity and how you can use existing tools in new and interesting ways. This can be as part of study, teaching or research.

Technologies covered

  • 3D design, modelling and 3D scanning
  • Audio, image and video editing
  • Animation and illustrations
  • Data visualisation
  • 360 filmmaking and immersive technologies

Our guidance on these technologies can be found on our Digital Creativity Practical Guide:

This lab can help you with the 'digital' end of creation. We also have YorCreate, our makerspace with 3D printers, digital cutters and much more; to help with creating physical things.

Recording Studios

We have a Podcasting Studio and Video recording suite. These spaces are available to all active members of the University of York, for any recording need.

Podcasting Studio

Our podcasting studio features ready-to-record professional kit with a podcast-specific mixing desk and high quality microphones. It's got space for up to 4 people. This space is free to use to create and build your own podcast.

Before you can book this space, one member of your group must first complete a 30-minute long induction. This is so you can learn how the equipment works, and have a successful recording session.

Video recording suite

Our video recording space is designed for recording Solo videos. These can be screen recording, presentations or just talking to camera. The space has a quality microphone, camera and teleprompter to help you record a video. This space is designed for one person.

Equipment in Video studio

The studio is available on Mondays and Wednesdays and can be booked via the Video studio booking system

Equipment Loans

University of York staff and students can take advantage of the Creativity Lab's free equipment hire service. Equipment such as VR headsets, camera and audio equipment is available to use, with support from the Creativity Lab team. These can be used for creating a short film, or recording some higher quality audio. The equipment can be booked online via our equipment catalogue.

Media Workstations

We have a lab space in the Harry Fairhurst Library building. The space features 16x high-end gaming-spec PCs, perfect for Creative Media work. The PCs include more than the standard university software, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Game Engines (Unity and Unreal), plus a range of other media editing and 3D modelling tools. No booking is required.
